What is question logic?
(and what other terms are used for it)

You might have heard terms like survey logic, skip logic, or branching. They all describe the same idea: adapting questions based on previous answers. Pointerpro’s question logic takes it further, allowing both the flow and content of your assessment to adjust in real time for each respondent.

Below, you’ll find examples ranging from basic to advanced setups.

How does question logic shape every respondent’s individual journey?

Dynamic recommendations mechanism 1

1. The respondent
answers

Each respondent starts your questionnaire and provides answers that reflect their unique situation or profile.

Dynamic recommendations mechanism 2

2. Logic rules are
triggered

As they progress, your predefined logic conditions come into play. They determine what questions or other information appear next.

Dynamic recommendations mechanism 3

3. The questionnaire
flow adapts

Irrelevant questions disappear, follow-up questions appear when needed, and every path becomes more personalized and relevant.

4. You collect
better data

Respondents move smoothly through the experience, leading to higher completion rates and more accurate, insightful data for your analysis or reports.

What are the most common question logic options to personalize your assessments?

1. Skip to question

This rule lets you jump respondents directly to a specific question based on a previous answer. Instead of following a fixed sequence, participants move smoothly to the next relevant part of the questionnaire.

You use it to create efficient, personalized flows - so respondents only see what matters to them and skip what doesn’t.

In a training needs assessment, if a respondent selects “I manage a team”, the next question can jump to “How often do you coach your team members?”, skipping all questions meant for individual contributors.

2. Hide questions

This rule keeps questions hidden unless certain conditions are met. You can decide exactly when a question appears, based on one or more previous answers.

You use it to keep questionnaires clean, relevant, and shorter - so respondents aren’t distracted by content that doesn’t apply to them.

In a customer feedback survey, if a respondent rates product quality and service both as “Excellent”, detailed follow-up questions about issues or complaints remain hidden.

3. Skip to end

This rule ends the questionnaire early when certain conditions are met, sending respondents straight to the end screen or a closing message.

You use it to save time for respondents who have already provided sufficient information - or to display a tailored closing message or call-to-action.

In a pre-screening assessment, if a respondent indicates “I don’t have a driver’s license”, the questionnaire can automatically skip to the end screen explaining eligibility requirements.

Why should your assessments use question logic?

Focus your time on interpreting meaningful insights, not cleaning up messy data. Let automation handle the logic, so you can focus on delivering value.

What question logic features take your assessment experience to the next level?

Showing or hiding answer options

Sometimes it’s not about skipping or hiding an entire question - but fine-tuning the available answers. With this rule, you show or hide specific answer options based on previous responses.

You use it to keep questions contextually relevant while maintaining a smooth flow, giving respondents the sense that the assessment “understands” them.

In a training needs assessment, if a respondent indicates they work in sales, the next question about preferred learning topics can automatically hide irrelevant options like “advanced coding” or “supply chain management”, and instead display options tailored to commercial skills.

Piping: Using information downstream

Piping allows you to reuse information a respondent provided earlier, automatically inserting it into later questions or text blocks. It makes each question feel personal and conversational.

You use it to maintain engagement and clarity while reducing redundancy in your questionnaires.

In a digital transformation assessment, if a respondent indicates their organization is in the “planning stage”, a later question can automatically read: “What’s the biggest barrier holding you back from making digital ambitions actionable?”

Formula based question logic

This highly advanced rule uses calculations from multiple answers or sections to decide what comes next. You can apply logic based on totals, averages, or complex formulas. Ideal when precision and nuance matter.

You use it to build sophisticated assessments that adapt dynamically to scores or weighted conditions.

In an employee engagement survey, a formula combines satisfaction, motivation, and alignment scores. If the result falls below a set threshold, the assessment automatically routes respondents to targeted follow-up questions about workplace support.

Yes. You can apply several logic types at once - such as skip, hide, or formula-based rules - to create a fully adaptive flow. Each rule works together seamlessly to keep your assessment relevant from start to finish.

Question logic controls what respondents see while answering the questionnaire. Report logic, on the other hand, determines what content appears in the personalized report with dynamic recommendations afterward. Both work hand-in-hand to deliver a fully customized experience.

DFY is the quickest way to get there. Our team will do the heavy lifting here.
